Nick Higdon's Media Detox

My 12 hours without media was actually a very social experience. My day started at 10 AM. I ate a bowl of cereal and helped my mom paint our basement until around 3 PM. I then went to dinner with members of my family. Then around 7 PM, I left to play poker with my friends. I played until about 1 AM and drove home and went to bed.
The hardest things to not check were Twitter, Snapchat, my texts, and Instagram. I'm so used to just checking my phone basically every 5 minutes. YouTube, Netflix, and internet news were the easiest to avoid. I enjoy all of them but I don't have the same craving for them as I do social media. It was especially hard when I was painting with my mom. We talked a lot but we were down there for so long that we ran out of things to talk about. It actually was a little depressing not being able to check my phone. I didn't have anything to distract me from myself, so my mind just wandered off.
The social aspect of my life increased tremendously because I wasn't getting the interaction I'm used to getting from Twitter. I was a lot more open with my family and able to truly enjoy the company of my friends. With that being said, the second those 12 hours were up I immediately got on my phone and engulfed myself back into the internet.
Media plays a huge role in my social circle. The internet gives us things to talk about. Then those turn into a deeper conversation and gives us a better understanding of each other. Too much media can definitely lead to problems in social interaction, but the right amount of media makes the conversation better.
